In 1953 she made her film debut in Will Any Gentleman? and was soon
at home in film farce, playing a teacher in The
Belles of St Trinian's and saucy roles in 'Doctor' comedies. The
cinema was to dominate her life for the next 20 years, a period when
she returned to the stage only four times. She became a favourite foil
of such TV comedians as Dick Emery and Stanley Baxter, and made her
first appearance in a 'Carry On' comedy film with Carry
On Nurse in 1959. Twenty-three more 'Carry Ons', plus three more
'Doctors, and several other ensemble comedies were to follow.
