Angus MacPhail, screenwriter, closely associated with Michael
Balcon for two decades. 1927-31: scripts for Gainsborough. 1931-37
including the The
Ghost Train (1931). A story supervisor for Gaumont-British
1939-48: story supervisor at Ealing
where his films ranged from The
Foreman Went to France (1942) and Went
the Day Well? (1942). His later projects included British omnibus
feature Dead of Night (1945). MacPhail
was valued more as a script editor and script doctor than an original
writer; all but one of his 23 Ealing script credits are shared. During
the 50's he went on to the American Hitchcock production The Wrong Man (1956).
